I have noticed that the aiming point of view on the camo turret tank seems to be the most accurate ie: you feel like you have an eye level sight on it, (the trusty indicator).

Without going into the names of the various tanks that can be loaded, I was wondering if there is a "Consensus" to determine a standard that all models will follow, or if it will be a matter of learning the tank at hand?

Is it in theory (sic), that a model can be made of such a height as to oversee opponents and have high ground? Or as far as that matters a lower POV?

I use the camo turret and many other upper echelon players do as well. For good reason, (indicator level) >POV<.

I know this is modeling issue more than an .xml issue, I was wondering how much of an angle of deflection in >POV< is involved and/or allowed between various models?

Also, although it hasn't been voiced yet as far as I know... I have had it happen to me and seen others (CBX) >suicide< with rollers etc. when from a POV (for certain tanks) that clearly shows the indicator elevated above a ridge or crest of a crater.

.BMP question follows:

I've modified .bmps for skins, landscapes and skies. ie: plana.bmp (warp grid).

I was wondering if the V38 file names will be in conflict with the majority of files that i have changed?

SQL question:

I've seen the question asked on the rated servers. So I will voice it once more here for verification.

Will launch of V38 have to establish an entirely new MYSQL database? (Or) Can we note our ID's and keep rank?

That's the easiest question I could ask and probably the hardest for you to answer.

I'll follow the game regardless of the MYSQL issue, I'm afraid that many will not.

Kind regards,

Apollo :P

I guess this could happen. The actual size of the tank and the position of the gun in the model is irrelevant. All tanks are considered to be the same size and fire from the same point, regardless of the looks.

No (see above) all tanks are actually equal.

I guess this models look could match the actual firing position.

Yes I guess this could be a problem. Perhaps the indicator should appear from where the actual shot comes from not the models end of gun. In the eariler models I made this was the same place. But in newer more elaberate models the two have diverged.

v38 uses the same file names. Is that what you mean.

I guess it is possible to do both. However I am currenly favouring starting again from scratch. With perhaps a historical list of winners for version 37.

I guess thats for people to say in this thread :)

Well does your Database question merely pertain to the reset of ranks? (If so, you shoulda just worded it simpler :P ).. I am for it. Even though I have fought my way and slaughtered enough to be in the 20's - I still beleive in the fresh start and an improved ranking system. One where quality beats quantity. (Even if that means I never reach such a high rank)

i say start over. like willis said, with an improved system, not based solely on quantity. I would be partial to kills averaged over seconds played. others have suggested base rank on accuracy. just so the people who spend the most time playing don't get the highest ranks.

Point taken.

My rebuttal:

With the weapons allowed and the defensive techniques available, there is no true algorithm that can determine a "game win". (K's) Unless you look towards... MYSQL

>unbiased< (for MYSQL) regarding >SIC< to a valid leader in stats. FN#1(That would pertain to a value on (intellect)/or saavy). WILLIS there is your answer.

The MYSQL database does NOT delve into the personalities where it could, determine and or render in it's "exact" conclusion. (MYSQL) does not discriminate.

In my biased opinion, the existing MYSQL works! To exeplify it, I will expound on it.

Other than "hit points".

There is no factor that can option for (algorithms) based on the following, WITHOUT a referee to unbiasedly judge the intellect of a (player). Or the lack of.

>among others< which makes the game so fun!!!

Kills count/WHY???? (MYSQL)!

Point 1 save money for a few rounds.
Point 2 use of fuel.
point 3 throw dirt.
point 4 dirt/fuel + fuel/dirt
point 5 use of batteries = reverses hit points. (credit)?
point 6 use of foul language.
point 7 chutes? or sans chutes?
point 8 re-join, the noobs do.
point 9 THE DREADED "double loggers".
point 10 I think Gavin has enough to worry about now that He is married, so let's get HIM out for a few LAP DANCES! eieieieieieieieieiei Whaaaaaaahhhhh!! C'mon!! let's keep it Fun! WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-oOOOOooOOOoOoOOOOOOOO!

btw: I just had a fun game w/ miroslav where fuel was a factor in the outcome, although I lost the battle, I think he admired the fact that "other" techniques" can be used in defense.

In 10 years we will all be dead and wonder on our last breath, why oh why was scorched3D so mean to us.

I'd throw Gavin 1 million dollars to launch this but alas, all i have is a vault filled with "tracers".

FN#1 MYSQL is not a "grey area" it is based on pure data.

Hi users!

I agree with Willis. Rankings that take into account quality rather than quantity would be great.

But maybe there could be two rankings. One with the old stats that works on the old criteria. And a separate new one that is based on maybe shots fired, hits and kills. Would that be an option?

I also think that the use of shields should be more limited or even abolished. That would make gameplay more offensive. Or maybe there could be a penalty for using shields? Like cash-deductions, less aiming time or something else?

A lot of top players (I'm not one of them!!!) don't use shields anyway and my ranking has improved dramatically since I started to concentrate on attacking power rather than defence.

Guys, what do you say?

I feel this would just be counter-productive. I do not use sheilds constantly but I am not unfamiliar with them. Sheilds have pulled me though many tuff fights where I have multiple targets firing upon me. Using a sheild I may survive with only 3-4 life left.

As is typical with human behaviour, recent posts have heatedly advocated or denigrated certain play strategies or equipment :
  • Resigning
  • Shields
  • Dirt piles
  • Sandhogs
  • DeathHeads
  • And even batteries (by noobs who think batts are cheating! :))

Instead of whining (and I'm not suggesting that Comrade Nebkov is whining, but certain others have) & denigrating strategies that you don't like -- remember that this is a game of WAR & KILLING which requires skill, strategy, experimentation, diplomacy, luck, & a sense of good sportsmanship.

Instead of everyone complaining about how other peoples' strategies are "bad" & your own strategies are "fair" or "better", just play the game -- kill, be killed, & have fun.

This isn't a rant so much as a pointer that we all enjoy this game & the various ways that it is played. Besides for Moke(s), everyone's playing this game at fantastic & creative levels. Don't try to hinder the creativity & gameplay & fun by suggesting ways to LIMIT the game.

Just die like the noobs you all are. ;)

AHHHHH! YES! :P

The players with the saavy to survive should be rewarded! After all, don't you have to be more creative to survive through a round?

Would it be unfair to reflect a players "quality" of play by rewarding them with a rank that is based on survival skills rather than be rewarded for "merely" Kills?

Maybe a quotient can be worked out for MYSQL that has a variable thrown in for SURVIVE?/?KILL :o

Then we can compliment each other by chatting NL for "Nice Live" instead of ns for "nice shot"!!

I'm glad that a more valid debate has been brought to the table, I felt compelled to voice my opinion on the matter and I'm happy that it's piqued some interest in the community of players.

SO! Let's get the vote out! Spread the word and encourage our other players to voice their opinion.

Prose and Con's :Eddie Murphy: SNL skit.

Oh btw... I have a mod you might want to try for yourself. So here is what I did;

I changed the para.wav file with my own voice saying "Parachute Deployed". Oh what a better reminder than to deploy them other than the little clicking sound!

Kind of like the voice prompt fliers get from the computer for "Low Altitude".

PULL UP! PULL UP! PULL UP!

Unless of course you are flying low and inverted, in that case, the Computer encourages you to suicide! LOL!

Hi dudes and dudettes!

Having gone through Willis' and Hobbesme's replies I have reached one conclusion:

There are probably too many different opinions regarding gameplay so that changing everything to satisfy everybody either simply impossible or would lead to a completely different game. The latter would be a shame, as scorched3d is a great game as it is. Why change a good thing?

So, maybe discussions (including me, by all means!) should be kept to the basics, that really matter. I can live with my target reemploying shields and the sound of his batts rattling in my ears turn after turn - it makes victory even sweeter! So, here I agree with Hobbesme that the game is about killing and winning. Survival of the fittest, so to speak.

Nothing makes me as mad though, as a player who resigns after I've been using expensive weapons on him. A certain kill turns into a "Player X resigned"-message.

Dirt can be frustrating, too. But it is still better than resigning. And, I quite enjoy hiding in a big mountain of dirt. Even won two rounds doing so - at the risk of being sandhogged or napalmed...

As for the stats - well, I've just reached 140, which for me is my best ranking ever. OK, OK, there will be 139 people laughing now... but I think even if the stats get reset, we will have acquired the skill to repeat that feat. people like Paris and Goose will again rise to the top. And, a new challenge has never hurt anybody. i could live with any decision Gavin makes.

Happy hunting!

discussion is always a good thing. the more input from players, the better the game will get. we welcome your future participation, Comrade!

as for shields, they add to the strategic dimension of the game. do I spend the money to fortify eself at the cost of offensive capability?

there are countless methods of playing, and countless variants thereupon. everyone is going to find a niche, and the fun part is watching those niches interact on the battlefield
