Hi there, thanks for the resurrecting of this cool game!! I have a problem though. When I want to enter the game I get an "Out of range" error and a black screen behind it. I then have to restart to continue. My resolution of the game is set on 800x600 and my screen resolution is 1440x900. What can I do to make it work.

Thanks

i have the same issue whenever i run scorched with default settings. the solution is to choose a game resolution your monitor supports : )

would be nice to maybe have a pop-up or something, though. better still, have it default to windowed mode?

You think defaulting to windowed mode is best? I changed it to fullscreen because that's what I thought people would want.

For windows users I think you're right Gavin, but with linux it's such an ass to switch apps when theres a full screen game because alt+tab doesn't work (without hassle).

Plus this, I don't believe is the kind of game that requires full screeness, partly because it doesn't demand 100% attention.

Maybe poll it?

Ive always used windowed mode. : ) Multi-tasking in my graphical windows environment.

As the guys above will know, the problem is more likely an unsupported refresh rate. The x servers default 800x600 mode is out of range.

Messing with this stuff may be overly cumbersome for a modern Ubuntu user, but editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf to set '800x600' mode to within monitors spec would fix things at the users end.

(example, adding:
Code:
Modeline "800x600" 47.44 800 832 1008 1040 600 612 619 63
to my 'Monitor' section fixed things for me when I tested a minute ago).

Any way you could request/set a particular refresh rate to go with that default 800x600 res, Mr C? Maybe 72kHz?

Update:

It occurred to me while I was sleeping earlier, the system really shouldnt be presenting display modes to games that the monitor doesnt support. (especially as defaults), and its not fair to expect a game dev to compensate for these issues. So I checked the Nvidia site, case its a known bug.

Turns out there are a couple of options you can add to your 'Screen' section in xorg.conf
Code:
Option "ModeValidation" "NoXServerModes"

Option "ModeValidation" "DoubleScanPriority"

Either of the above options should fix the problem without messing with modelines. The first disables any display modes not given as supported by the monitor. The second reverses the priority of standard vs doublescan modes for a given res. (Doublescan being the root of the problem in my case).

Hope that helps.

Options found at: http://uk.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L ... dix-b.html

Maybe we could add some of that stuff to the wiki? I dont know if these issues are unique to Debian/Ubuntu.

Ps:
Eric, you shouldnt need to restart the system when you encounter this kind of thing. You can try switching ttys with ctrl, alt, f-keys, and killing the process with ps and kill commands.

Pps:

I believe there are options in 'Keyboard Shortcuts' for both KDE and Gnome for 'Toggle full screen mode'. Theyre not mapped by default on any of my computers. Doesnt work for Scorched from my experience, but may be worth a look for some other games.
