Gentlemen of the Jury: The best friend a man has in the world may turn
against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared
with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to
us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name may become
traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away
from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man's reputation may be
sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to
fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us, may be the first to
throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads.

Gentlemen of the Jury: The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have
in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves
ungrateful or treacherous is his dog. A man's dog stands by him in prosperity
and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground,
where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be
near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer. He will
lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the
world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When
all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings, and reputation
falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through
the heavens.

If fortune drives the master forth, an outcast in the world, friendless and
homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying
him, to guard him against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the
last scene of all comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his
body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their
way, there by the graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his
paws, his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even in
death.

Senator George Graham Vest

Side Note : These were the closing remarks presented in the
case heard on September 23, 1870 concerning the murder of
Old Drum. The hound that became a Missouri State legend.

Anyone with eyes open knows that the gangsterism of Wall Street — financial
institutions generally — has caused severe damage to the people of the
United States (and the world). And should also know that it has been doing
so increasingly for over 30 years, as their power in the economy has radically
increased, and with it their political power. - Noam Chomksy

Leute, welche uns ihr volles Vertrauen schenken, glauben dadurch ein Recht auf das unsrige zu haben. Dies ist ein Fehlschluss; durch Geschenke erwirbt man keine Rechte.

Nietzsche - Menschliches, Allzumenschliches

People who have given us their complete confidence believe they have a right to ours. The is a fallacy; a gift confers no rights.

Nietzsche - Human, All Too Human

To the rulers of the state then, if to any, it belongs of right to use
falsehood, to deceive either enemies or their own citizens, for the
good of the state: and no one else may meddle with this privilege. - Plato

But in a country, where the perpetual menacings of danger
oblige the government to be always prepared to repel it,
her armies must be numerous enough for instant defence.
The continual necessity for his services enhances the
importance of the soldier, and proportionably degrades the
condition of the citizen. The military state becomes elevated
above the civil. The inhabitants of territories often the
theatre of war, are unavoidably subjected to frequent
infringements on their rights, which serve to weaken
their sense of those rights; and by degrees, the people
are brought to consider the soldiery not only as their
protectors, but as their superiors. The transition from
this disposition to that of considering them as masters,
is neither remote nor difficult: but it is very difficult to
prevail upon a people under such impressions, to make a
bold, or effectual resistance, to usurpations supported by
the military power. - Alexander Hamilton : Federalist Paper #8

Statesmen will invent cheap lies, putting blame upon the
nation that is attacked, and every man will be glad of
those conscience-soothing falsities, and will diligently
study them, and refuse to examine any refutations of
them; and thus he will by and by convince himself
that the war is just, and will thank God for the better
sleep he enjoys after this process of grotesque
self-deception. - Mark Twain : The Chronicle of Young Satan

I agree to this Constitution with all its faults, if they are
such: because I think a General Government necessary for
us, and there is no Form of Government but what may be a
Blessing to the People if well-administred; and I believe
farther that this is likely to be well administred for a
Course of Years and can only end in Despotism as other
Forms have done before it, when the People shall
become so corrupted as to need Despotic Government,
being incapable of any other. - Benjamin Franklin

For nine years following 1945 we denied the people of Vietnam the
right of independence. For nine years we vigorously supported the
French in their abortive effort to recolonize Vietnam. Before the
end of the war we were meeting eighty percent of the French
war costs. Even before the French were defeated at Dien Bien Phu,
they began to despair of their reckless action, but we did not. We
encouraged them with our huge financial and military supplies to
continue the war even after they had lost the will. Soon we
would be paying almost the full costs of this tragic attempt at
recolonization. - Martin Luther King, Jr. : April 4, 1967
