Recently i've been annoyed by a few philosophical questions in my head... so instead of turning my brain inside out trying to find an answer i'll let the collective mind of the scorched forums help me compute... :D

When we die (something we all gotta do someday) - If there is no religion - what happens to the "self" as you know it - what is it like not to be able to even think about what it is like not to exist......

and another, which has some application in Scorched, hehe, thinking of teleportation, if we succeed in teleporting a human from one place to another, will that mean that we kill//vaporize (whatever suitable word) and create an exact replica with the same thoughts... will the original "self" die, and a new "you" which the old you has no control over be created instead? And can this be proven right or wrong in such a case - cause the clone will have the exact same cell-structure in the brain, but will it be the same person?

just a few things to let people here think about :D

This is where I wish that life was like the Scavenger mod. I'd still have 3 more lives left. ;)

I can't say for fact if there's a existence after we die. If we return in another form / body, or we travel to some other plain of existence (heaven/hell)..

But I figure I'll wait and leave it as a surprise. I'm not going to let concerns over what happens after death, decide who I am or what I do while in life. After all, good and evil are merely perspectives.
What I say today may not be what I say tomorrow.
What I say tomorrow may contradict what I say today.
So listen to what I say, not what I said.

Well, following SuperString Theory, the body - during teleportation - would be converted to energy, and reformed into matter at another place. My theory is this: when a human, or any animal, is teleported in this way, all memories (for the teleport subject) would be lost due to how the teleport works. Sorry to those of you who haven't read the book "The Elegant Universe".

Edit: Also, I believe in my own theory of what happens when we die. I won't go into explaining it though. :P
Cool! Are we going to smite my enemies now? How about my friends?
You know what they say - 'The body you find may be your own.'
Very funny Scotty, now beam down my clothes.

Hmm... The superstring theory looks interesting, gotta look into it....
jdog, maybe you should invest some time in the g-string theory? ;)

I'm pretty much an agnostic. I'll be on a "free" shopping spree when the rapture comes.

two answers, perhaps might help a tiny bit.

Life after death has been reported by many people who have been dead and come back to life. Some after hours of death. The truth of the stories you would have to judge for yourself.

about teleportation, there would be no way to prove, in either case, that the teleported human, or object was the same one, because you cannot prove that the object is NOT a perfect copy. You cannot prove a negative. All that could be done is to observe and record differences after teleport. WIthout any differences, all you would have are theories that cannot be proven.

I really enjoy talking with folks in other countries, drinking stoli/tonic... pulling off shots that seem impossible, drinking..

Fact: CO2 = less than .04% (.00038) of the atmosphere - only a small fraction of that is man made.

Well both questions can be discussed ad aeternam, because the answers are a matter of personal faith/belief/whatever.

For life after death, we all know this is one of religions main debate.

It is the same for the teleportation issue, because it resume to believing or not that someone is completely defined by its physical, material properties. In other words, depends if you believe that people are also made of an immaterial "soul" or not.

I have no definitive opinion on the matter. We'll each see sooner or later

I'd have to that my opinion is null on the subject. Since there really isn't strong evidence for anything, I can't really say.

See, Superstring Theory states that all matter is actually made up of energy, therefore EVERYTHING that exists is energy. This includes people. The theory says, more specifically, that quarks are made of vibrating, one-dimensional loops of energy. Therefore, during teleport, those strings would be 'un-looped', sent to another location, and 're-looped'. Therefore the subject, at end of teleport, would be both the old person and a new 'copy' of the person. (my own theory)

I hope we all know what quarks are, but just in case:

Quarks are the particles that make up protons, neutrons, and electrons. Electrons contain a single, negatively-charged quark. Protons contain two positives and a negative. Neutrons contain two negatives and a positive.

Another theory I found interesting was that neutrinos (NOT neutrons) may actually be tachyons.

Well, that ends my scientific rant. :P
