I was playing last night against the bot when I had an error and was kicked from the server between rounds 7 and 8. The error message (which I didn’t save) said something about a Landscape being size 256 x 92. I re-connected (which started a new game) and played 2 – 3 more games w/ no problems. I don’t know if this was a problem on my end or the server’s end, hopefully it was just a fluke.
Personally, I think Evil Fred didn’t want me to win that game and kicked me. 😉
Where x can be either a static number, like 0.5, or dynamically calculated based on the player in 1st place with a formula like:
x = Skill of 1st place player/(2*Kills of 1st place player)
The static value is obviously simpler, but as the kills start adding up, the number of kills you have becomes more important to your ranking. The dynamic value takes care of this.
Either way, this method means you don’t have to have a cut-off for the number of kills and that a player w/ 50 kills can have a better ranking than someone w/ 150 kills if they are good enough. This would also take care of the bot somewhat (where the skill is low and the kills are high). If needed, the kills for the bot could just be zeroed out once a week or the bots could be changed periodically.
I like the idea of the different levels as a practice tool and skills test. As it is now, Level 3 is too hard, the bots teleport too much. I never got the colosseum map so I couldn’t do many sniper shots. How about changing Level 3 to be a sniper-shot only level? That is the name of the mod, so it would be appropriate. Only use flat-ish maps like colosseum or the USA map, and only use sniper weapons, like the M242 or even baby missiles (if the bots don’t have shields). If you do that, you can leave the teleporting the way it is to keep it challenging.
Level 4 is good. I only played it once (and didn’t quite kill the last bot), but it was fun. I will try again.
