    Hi Again:

Perhaps I jumped the gun earlier in reporting my progress. Watching as a spectator, the game ran for over 32 hours without much of a burp even though I was close to being in the maximum graphics mode.

My Main Settings were as follows:

    Display Resolution – 1440 x 900 Full Screen
    Dialog/Font Size – Medium
    Sound 8 Channels

    Show Tool Tips
    Side Scrolling
    Client Logging
    Validate Server IP

In the Troubleshooting/Detail Page everything is on with the only exceptions being:

    1. Texture Detail – Medium instead of Large
    2. Effects Detail – Medium instead of High
    3. No Ships
    4. No Birds (Boids)
    5. No precipitation
    6. No VBO

The problem I’ve seen twice since my previous post seems to be caused by me. A player that has a serious connection issue was logging in repeatedly only to be kicked for failure to respond. This happend several times without incident although I suspected he might cause the cascading disconnect I reported or even worse, crash the server and thus end the game for the 4 human and 12 bot players. When I entered the game we made it through the first round without incident but on the first shot of round two I was disconnected and received the following error message:

Compressed Coms buffer was too large to receive 670,463

The bots continued play although the rest of the humans were disconnected and received the same error message. We started a new game with only one other human and myself and again we were kicked in round 2 although we were able to get in a few shots. The error message was the same with the exception of the size ( 522,100).

I realize that having 100 targets exploding at once is much more demading than 3 or 4 but this doesn’t seem to be too much of problem most of the time. Do you think that these recent “crashes” are being caused by my playing on the server or is it simply a coincidence and is there anything that can be done, an emergency patch release perhaps, to increase the size of the Compressed Coms Buffer to 999,999?

Thank you in advance for whatever help you care to provide and for taking time out of your day to read this post.

    Rob and Gavin:

Thanks for the input. I am pleased to report that I am having limited success in overcoming the problem even though I have just launched the most graphics intensive map yet. Currently the maximum map size is 320 X 320 as this results in a less than 2 second fuel range lag which most everyone finds acceptable. Increased to 1,500 K as the maximum landscape size and have decreased the max download speed to 125 K. Hopefully decreased transfer speed is allowing new users to enter without sucking up all the available bandwidth and isn’t hurting anyone else in the process. I am still having occasional “coms buffer too large” errors but the cascading effect of disconnecting all human players seems to be decreased significantly from what it had been in the past.

If you have the time and desire to see new map…..it’s the second one in the game. The only problem I see consistently is that multiple large bombs and explosions result in choppy effects (stutter or strobe). I figure that is more a limitaion of my graphics card and not related to the game code. I have tried FPS rates from 33 to 100 in the past but never saw a difference so I set it back to the default of 66.

Oh yeah, I have managed to decrease bot self kills which is a major probem for an army that hopes to win. By having them use dirt as a smallexploson weapon and then use a telepoter as a dig weapon they now have the ability to spawn in a factory and survive. With so many targets on the map they were killing themselves pretty fast before. If they are in a bad location hopefully they will dirt themselves and then teleport to a safer location. The decrease in bots suicide seems to be raising moral and the bots are, once again, occassionally winning against the better human players.

Thanks again for your time and thoughts.

“I’m going to blow up your tank and feed your guts to my dog.” “If you shot half as well as you talk you’d be ahead right now.” “Oh yeah, well your mom wears army boots.” “Oh yeah, well my dad can beat up your dad.” “Oh yeah.” “Yeah.” bla bla bla bla bla

Perhaps it would be a good idea to consider that an overly abrasive player gains an edge by getting you to lose your cool and that is their objective. It’s also good to remember that THIS IS A GAME. Have fun. There are options available both to the users and to the sysop but no one seems to want to use the user options.

As a user you can first chose to ignore the person trying to upset you. That works well most of the time. If you simply can not ignore the rantings of someone that most likely is 10 – 16 years old, then use the mute feature and stop them from chatting with you. The worst thing you can do is to acknowledge that you are upset by engaging them in an insult throwing barrage. Not only have you shown your weakness, you are now part of the problem. You are now (congratulations) an offensive player too. The other players most likely think you are almost as bad as the one that started it.

In my opinion, the sysop should only be forced to act in extreme cases.

    Hi Thrax:

Thanks for the information and I’m sorry if I seemed a little steamed last week. I don’t intend to import new objects into the Apoc Mod or do much more in the way of changes than the kinds of changes I’ve already done. I have a new map in mind that I hope will be acceptable and I intend to keep changing the bots in the hopes of finding a combination that makes one on one play a serious challange. I realize the current limitations on the bot weapon sets make this pretty much out of reach for now, and I’m looking forward to tearing into the new version. I’m also thinking about implementing a couple of different weapons based on the original design much the same as I did the shields, but no, I am very happy with the mod and have no desire to spit it away as a seperate entity.

renaming a mod is simple and allowed as long as you respect the
    original authors design.
Just duplicate the folder of the mod you have and save it as a new name.
The new name will become the mod-name shown in the game’s lists and
will be treated as seperate from Apoc itself.

If you intend to keep editing it away from the original apoc, then it
would be best to split it off sooner than later. Also remembering to
relable the single player mode files to use your mod-name.

As you are intending to keep the mod as a version of Apoc, them
perhaps renaming the folder to /apoc-champ/ would be sufficient.

I would be perfectly happy to give it up and let it be hosted with APOC HQ FFA if I could keep mixing things up and making little tweeks here and there. The skill of the players I’ve been hosting has made keeping the game fresh and demanding a great challange and one which I have found that I enjoy perhaps a little more than actually playing. 😯

    Hi:

As you should have read, I honored his request and gave him a name and a title (Lee, Admin 4). That was my “familiar nick” as admin at that time. I was watching the game as a spectator using Player 11. In order to show him what had occurred several days before, I had to use the admin chat feature. I’m sorry you find the log segment too confusing to be able to see that I was in fact able to show him how he made the mistake of thinking I had or wanted his avatar. All I wanted was a retraction, which I thought he agreed to make. Not only did I not see that, I then find a post accusing me of threatening to give him a virus. Again, I’m sorry that you find the log too confusing to be able to discern that his assertions were in fact, not true. That was the point I was trying to make. To be perfectly clear here, I am innocent of the charges that were levied against me. Surely, that is clearly shown in the log.

Rommel, first, I think Legion wanted to know your nick. Your Familiar nick. NOT your REAL name. U seem to covered up by talking with admin talk and with using “palyer 11”. I can understand his request.
Second, even I, a person that English isn’t his first language, didn’t understand ANYTHING from the log u posted. BTW, why did u used 2 nicks to talk? couldn’t u just logged in as “Rommel” and say u r the admin? it is much more simple.
Again, I think im more confused now then before u posted your reaply and much more after the log. U got a good english in the forum..what happen there in the game chat?
    😕

    Hi:

Thank you for taking the time to post your reply. After reading it, I implemented a warning message on the MoTD which alerts everyone that they need to return to Apoc HQ FFA to restore their original files upon leaving Apoc Champions. I’m not exactly sure how to go about applying for a new mod name or even if it is required but I am willing to cooperate. Would Apoc + or Apoc X be acceptable? It is still Rob’s mod and all I’ve really done is tweaked the user adjustable settings so that it is more extreme for the players and gives the bots more of a fighting chance. Some guidence on this, would be appreciated.

Before anybody jumps the gun here, about the altered mod no-no stuff, I think if you’ve changed the mod then you might be better off renaming it to make it perfectly clear that it’s modified and to avoid overwriting the files of the official mod. (Not sure about the latter, but it’s quite important.) People might get the idea that they can complain to/accuse the original author about stuff that you’ve messed up yourself.
