finally! A thread that delivered exactly what it promised 😕
Besides, if my Athlon 1500 with MX4000/256 gfx and 7200RPM drives can push scorched then the numbers don’t mean much then do they?
Hi all! I’m back from my fantastic journeys through the high desert, along the pacific ocean, and through the amazing gigantic redwood forests! 6000+ miles logged for the week!! I’m soooo tired…. I’ll be back to the game soon!
Well, you’re not alone Kowal. This has happened to me also once in 41.1 and then again more recently in 4.3. The time it happened recently I was killed, and then next shot I the 2 huds at the bottom came up, but all the data was blank in the one that normally shows Angle, Power and Rotation, and I wasn’t able to actually do anything that turn. On the second turn though my tank reappeared and I was able to shoot again.
It seems like a fairly rare bug, which no doubt will make it more difficult to test and fix. I kind of like it though, it adds sort of a bit of uncertainty into the game 😉
Please don’t cancel the Christmas tournament! I’ve been looking forward to it for weeks now…
➡ If you cancel it then the terrorists have already won! 8)
seriously though.. just because some morons came up with a way to make themselves feel smarter doesn’t mean we should restrict the things we do, or live differently or cancel tournaments, or come up with super-spy bills. As far as i know only one person has been (tentatively) banned for cheating so far. So while the bot may exist, it seems that the vast majority of scorchers are honest folks that just want to have a fun time.
LOL.. very cute laptop 🙂
+5 points for a Felix The Cat reference 🙂
i think shockwave has some really good ideas for the bots, especially the idea of giving them sort of a continuity through the games and forming relationships with the players. Imagine, someday we could have long threads online about how so-and-so have bought off a bot with millions of scorched bucks that nobody else can compete with 😉 if nothing else this would give the big winners something to give some of that round 10 cash to instead of buying 20 DHs and 18 funkybombs (36 of which never get fired). Instead of buying this ridiculous level of weaponry players who find themselves with an excess of cash could throw $100K into buttering up a bot to help them out in the future.
Definitely some improvement to the AI in giving them some strategy with fuel and knowing who to pick on would be a big improvement, and I think it would be neat if the AI were good enough to be worth throwing one or two into the main server.
I’m not so sure about the colour changing idea… as others have mentioned already it could cause some big issues for people trying to find themselves on the map. I think this would cause further issues in the future if bots were aligned with certain players, as every single bot on the map would start out the same green, further complicating issues in the buy phase. For example, if your sworn enemy was next to a green arrow, that green arrow might represent your bot friend that would take him out for you first shot (therefor not really requiring any additional buying) or he could be a bot that hates you (therefor calling for a SMIRV or potentially a funky & shield).
So… Perhaps the answer is a bit different for bots… perhaps instead of an arrow pointing down at them, they should have some other shape, easily distinguishable from a distance, like a star or circle? Perhaps they could even have a circle divided into a pie chart displaying their allegiance between different players?
Perhaps, at some point, bots could even have complex personalities… for example: one bot could be an upright conservative type who is easily offended by censored text. Cursing in chat would then result in that bot being more likely to shoot you. Other bots could be xenophobes, bots live on the server, therefore they could know where people were connecting from and shoot people from places they don’t like. Other bots could be “Hero” bots, trying to rescue those who are constantly persecuted or bully bots that would try and keep the losers at the bottom, Rommel bots that would always try to kill the leader… Bots could develop a propensity to using certain types of weapons, or shooting in a particular style (lobbers, poolsharks, snipers, etc.).
I guess it’s easy for us to all sit around and come up with ideas of how to improve things if we’re not the developers that actually have to put in the hard work of trying to formulate the algorithms to implement them, but we’ll keep doing it! 😆
+1 for less crowded maps.

Would be too overpowering. Best would be to mount them on the missile you are firing. So that you can see where it impacted. If you miss your target you have a visual reference where you hit. Sometimes when not paying attention, it can come in handy 🙂
i use fluxbox, it’s got a few extras that i like that vtwm was lacking. I like minimal desktops ’cause if your gonna waste cycles on flashy stuff like KDE, as i see it ya might as well be runnin Vista! *LOL*
The only reason i ever whisper truce is because some people get their panties in such a tight knot whenever anyone truces. These are usually the same people that shout “FFA!” “FFA!” “MCB SUCKS!” and then they whine endlessly about people using ‘hogs or funkies or MIRVS, or nukes, or rollers, or napalm, or shields, or fuel.
Alliances and truces are a part of war. When the British, French, or Americans (just using some examples here, not making a political statement) truce, they don’t wait till everyone else is dead and then start shooting at each other. If you think this gives certain players an advantage… then that’s true, but, that doesn’t mean it has to stay that way. Try making some friends, you can organize them also into your own “coalition of the willing”, and layeth the smackdown on the groups you don’t like.
To summarize, I think that instead of discouraging such groups, Scorched should make an effort to recognize them. As long as the game is multi-player they will always exist. It is simply a function of human nature, the better parts of human nature, like honor and valor, that people do not want to shoot their comrades. If you don’t like that, then simply organize against them, of course.. that makes you one of them 😉
i would love an MCB tourney 🙂
