Hmmmm, it doesn’t look like I’ll be able to be competitive.

Just a small thought, this competition will draw out all knowledge of map making in 41 (or so I hope). So would the competitors like to help assemble a map making tutorial after the competition? it would form a great culmination of skill.

I need the updated docs and the clock is already ticking. It’s hard for me to imagine that we have tags that no one has the knowlegde to implement but that seems to be the case.

I posted the problems that I’ve discovered on my own, such as the tags that must be removed from the map files and also the issue with the border section of the texture files. I was hoping that we’d have all of the information at hand before the contest started and have adequate time to prepare our entries.

For example, I was under the impression that this version was to allow map specific changes to be made to the server.xml file, ie… number of bots, gravity, weapon sizes, etc., etc., and I’m not finding the information I need in the forums or the Wiki.

    Will there be a category:
Maps most like one of Rob’s? If so, perhaps I can find one to enter there. 🙁

    Gavin,

Could you confirm that a large size (say 512×512) map has a chance of making it into the main game? That’s really the prize here, and I could do without wasting a couple of hundred hours if it doesn’t.

    Thanks in advance.

    ps:
are powers of 2 and multiples of 16 important?

Definately, these things are important and not just to computers:
Doubles tennis comes to mind for the power of two and mulitiples of 16 might interest me if I was 17. 😛

ok. first, be aware that certain combinations of height map/level size will crash the game.

second, my first entry into the category “other”. dedicated to my good fiend pom, an example of a slightly less orthodox method (because i can):

based on a free to download 3ds model (not one of mine : )

i know, “a five minute job won’t stand up to much”. i’d like to enter it anyway.

vnice in a kind of strange way 🙂

If you have a mod with a map in it that crashes the system send it to me and I will try and fix the issue.

i think the level sizes are the problem. height map size/res doesn’t seem to matter. e.g. 192wx256h, 240wx320h, 240wx384h seem to crash the game with a “process terminated unexpectedly” msg.

they seem ok the other way around (e.g. 256wx192h).

I think the wiki needs to be changed specifically the part under
    http://www.scorched3d.co.uk/wiki/index.php/Making_a_custom_map
When referencing the landscapes.xml file on my linux computer running as a regular user you need to edit the file
    /home/’~user’/.scorched3d/mods/none/data/landscapes.xml
so that i can use my custom map
    not the /usr/local/games/scorched3d/share/data/landscapes.xml
if you dont run as root it wont allow you to choose your custom map.
Just my thoughts (after working on this for 2 hours and rebuilding once). 😳 😳

When making a mod, the game automatically looks for the files called
in sub-folders of the mod itself. Then if not found, it referances the one’s
    in the game’s install path.

As specified in the initial opening, All maps made for the tourney will be
submitted in the form listed. Then they will be compiled into a
Gallery-Mod and hosted for all to see. They will not be seperately
added to the default yet. Only the winner/s/ map will eventually be
    added to the core-pack.

For those interested, and having trouble getting going, it possible that
it may be stretched a bit. Since most have been dealing first with
getting the v41 going propperly in the first place.

I’m equally challanged (and perhaps more than most) by the difficulty of finding the details required for proper implementation of ALL the available features. Rob has recently made a terrific improvement in the landscape section of the Wiki and hopefully the rest of the documention updates will soon follow.

It’s very frustrating when the documentation isn’t there to help or even worse is when you find the instructions but they are incomplete or won’t work. The best thing I’ve found to do in these cases is to post a question here and hope that some dear soul will provide an answer before I do something I’m sure to regret later.

When do the maps need to be posted??

They should be sent via PM, email, IM, Hard Disk, text copy, verbal form, or other means not yet known/listed/existing to either thrax or I (thrax preferably).

Good to see that laptop will have someone to compete against.

So how many people are actually competing? Do we have a list? I still stand by my the idea of extending the competition a bit.

Oh, a question; how many maps can each person submit? Is the limit 1, 5, 42, 113? Just wondering. I don’t want good map makers’ skills to be put to bed simply because they already made a map.

By the sounds of it, I will agree with you.
I will wait till people are more sure of themselves before declaring
a fixed date. Many are still learning. Myself, I am slightly distracted
trying to find gainfull employment again after playing Mr-Mom for the
    last year+.

It would be fair to say that with thier effort of getting one map made
the best they can, most will only be submitting 1 map each.
More would be accepted.. I suppose, but 10 half-assed maps won’t
    win over 1 well-made one.

As for Submitting, If people think they’re ready for it, I have made up
an independant http-upload page that all can access.

    http://advguild.myftp.org:8080/up-yours.html
It will not accept files over 8mb, which should be plenty for most maps.
If yours is larger, contact me personally and we’ll examine why it needs
    to be so large.

Be sure to check it over well first, I won’t be sitting here cleaning out an
    applicant’s “map-version1, map-version2, map-version3…”
