Hello! I want to discuss problem about translating SCORCHED 3D on Russian language.
    New Game — Новая игра
    Change mod — Сменить модификацию

Ну как вам нравится эта идея?

It is good, because there are many players, mostly kids, that barely speak English. A program with multi language GUI is almost a standard these days.

I have some questions, regarding translations:

    1. How to define multiple languages. There is a single lang.resource file, or there will be multiple lang.resource files – one per language?

    2. What method will be used for switching between languages? In game menu? ‘LANG’ environment variable for Linuxes?

    3. How to make translation. I imagine these steps:
    – got an lang.resource file with all the keys defined within.
    – save it as utf8, then make the translation, using your own keyboard layout. (it will be very easy this way, not writing immediately java style unicodes.)
    – then pass resulting file to some converter utf8_to_java-unicodes.

Oh! Thank you! I’ll try to do this. But I have some questions:

I think we have to turn to Gavin Camp.

    New problem:
    — The game is not supported Russian characters. What should I do? How do I know these unicode characters?

Alex, post the file here. (if the forum will not allow it, compress the file to *.zip and try to post it again). It is good to keep the source file in windows-1251 or urf-8, as it can easily read and edit.

Thanks Alex, I’ll try them out.

There should be many tools for creating these files as the file format is the same as the java localization format. That was part of the reason for doing it this way.

It will probably become an install option that allows you to switch language duing install time.
