SWars looks like SO much fun, but for me it freezes a few minutes into each game, always when some kind of explosion effect is going off, not necessarily the same one each time. Is it just me, or is there really a bug here?

What operating system are you using, blujay? I’m using Linux and SWars crashes like crazy (totally freezes, needing me to kill the process) unless I turn all the sounds off. With the sounds off, it seems to be perfectly stable.

I’m quite happy to believe this is an issue on my particular Linux installation, but other mods don’t crash (with the sounds enabled). Thrax tells me that not many use Linux to play SWars, though, so it might be a general issue with that mod under Linux…

I see from the SWars stats that you are, indeed, using Linux, blujay. Can you disable all sounds and see if that helps at all? If it does, then perhaps we can move towards some understanding of what’s going on.

Apparently, yes. Linux players have some form of audio error in swars.

As far as I know, Swars is the only mod that uses many forms of
    sound files at once.

The Default mod has a single ogg music file playing along with the
    game-effect wav’s.
Swars has several overlapping ogg sounds along with all the wavs. It
may be possible that something is getting conflicted.

Much as it pains me to ask, But.. are there any other Linux players that
would be interested in downloading and playing scorch-wars on the
official server.. so that we can compare notes?

Yep, I’m using Debian testing/unstable, with an nVidia card and the nvidia binary drivers. Sorry, I should have mentioned that at first.

I will try disabling the sounds, but I hope it can be fixed, because the sounds are really good. 🙂 I figure it must be a bug in the game, not the mod, because a mod shouldn’t be able to crash the game, right?

Though maybe it’s not crashing, since it’s freezing. If I strace it after it freezes, it’s on futex_wait… Maybe I can get a backtrace with gdb. Hmm…I’ll see….

    Marvelous. every little bit helps.

definately sound related, must be a conflicting type overflowing.

Sweet! I can’t wait to play SWars with full sound. 🙂 If you get a patch to test, let me know.

I’ve wondered if it might be worth re-sampling the sound files, perhaps on a Linux box, Thrax. I’ve been meaning to do it and and then try running the mod locally (with sounds on), but haven’t had time due to seasonal work pressures.

Also, when I took a look at the .ogg files, I noticed that you’d used a 176b/s sampling rate for many of the sound effects. Although I don’t really imagine that to be the cause of the problem, it did occur to me that a lower sample rate should reduce file sizes and thus download times would be lower — unless that was a deliberate move on your part for a reason that I’m not aware of?

man.. what is it with these sounds I thought we where past this..

after we did all the conversions.. all sounds should now be encoded @
the lowest possible for both .ogg & .wav I beleive @:

    sampling freq 22050
    1 channels mono
    bitrate 32kbs

maybe gavin or someone needs to be specific & let everyone know
exactly what is best to encode/ convert @ that scorched works best with.
seeing as trying to figure that out on our own is not working.

    more sound testing…

wonder if this could be the music related sounds..
ile try & narrow it down.

I just want to confirm that I and one other person I play with are also getting the sound-related crashes on Linux. We both run on Gentoo AMD64. This is the only mod that crashes, and we’ve played every other mod available.

I’d be happy to help track the issue down.

I`ll like to download the mod, but those fools at RarHost don`t let me:
each time I try to download it, it says: “Initiating download”, or “wait up to 2 minutes”… but after that, it reloads the page!, unfortunately, with NO dowload…. what can I do?

Connect to the server and it will download automatically, though it will take a little while to do so.
