I have made a test release of Scorched3D version 41.1 for OSX (ppc).
This is a test release as my mac is so old that I cannot verify that the water is correctly rendered (which it may not be), all other features should work.

Once this release is verified I will add it to the proper download page.

    Download Here:
    http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/scorched3d/Scorched3D-41.1.dmg?download

I have modified the Scorched3D build system (configure scripts) to allow building an OSX binary without patches or any other changes. The build system now uses OSX frameworks for most required libraries (except for wx-widgets).

Hopefuly these changes will make it easier to keep the mac version more current than previously possible.

The build changes will be commited once the binary has been verified.

Water seems correctly rendered with my mac at least (though a bit slow since i have to run it emulated (OSX 10.5.1 Intel))

Tried on my G4 running OSX 10.4.10 – works fine except for the music, which is just white noise on my system. Not a big issue for me – I prefer my music anyway.

    Great job

Src download page has been updated with mac OS compatible version:
    http://www.scorched3d.co.uk/downloadssrc.php

    Compile instructions:

Build instructions seems not to work on Leopard…. I get errors with the config-script on the OpenAL part…

checking for OpenAL compilation... *** Failed to compile using the OpenAL library.
    *** CFLAGS = -D_THREAD_SAFE
configure: error: *** Check the OpenAL library is correctly installed.

Haven’t got time to look into it further now, but i might do so when I get some more time… (whenever that’s gonna happen…)

Have a look in/or post the config.log the answer will be in there.

Basically its looking for alut.h which is not present in the standard OpenAL framework in Leopard. (OpenAL.framework contains al.h, alc.h and MacOSX_OALExtensions.h)
Now… what did Apple do to AL in 10.5…. I cannot compile AL from source, nor can I use the header files from the old package.

This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

It was created by configure, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.61. Invocation command line was

    $ ./configure

Tried on my G4 running OSX 10.4.10 – works fine except for the music, which is just white noise on my system. Not a big issue for me – I prefer my music anyway.

Same here on my G4 running OSX 10.5.1 – music is white noise, otherwise the game seems to work.

    Hiya-
First off, thanks Gavin. 41.1 is oh so pretty.

OK. I’ve tried 41.1 on two different Macs, at opposite ends of the spectrum:

    Mac A: 3.0 GHz (dual dual-core Xeon) Mac Pro, 6GB RAM, (measly) 7300 GPU @ 1600×1200.
    Mac B: 1.0 GHz G4 iMac, 768MB RAM, built-in craptacular GPU, 1024×768.

On the Mac Pro, at default settings, Scorched is gorgeous. The water is stunning. Due to the GPU, however, I had to back it down a notch or two for creamy-smooth goodness. Still very, very nice. Playing on a nice 22″ LaCie CRT is truly nifty.

Moving to the iMac was like going from a new ‘Vette to an old ragged-out Camaro… once it was dialed in, it was still fun. I took some notes… all apply to both the Mac Pro and the iMac… In no particular order:

    – Music is white noise (and I’m not talking about Vanilla Ice).

    – MIRVs seem to go long. Nail some dude with a baby missile, switch to MIRV, and fire at same settings, MIRV goes a good bit further… not like 40.1.

    – Please tell me there’s a way to turn off the jets and choppers. I appreciate the ambiance factor, but when you’re playing a casual game, maybe watching some tube as well, the BLAT BLAT BLAT of the choppers makes me mute the computer altogether. On the iMac, I would prefer to just turn off the choppers/jets/boids completely.

    – When playing against computer opponents, it would be nice to have a “Random” setting that doesn’t include Targets. I enjoy a three-team, twelve player game with the bots, and having Targets on any randomized team just honks.

    – Big problem with tanks and objects “floating” when the ground beneath them has been removed. I have a buncha screenshots if you want to see them.

    – A frequent problem where sounds repeat endlessly, particularly the “raising/lowering/turning turret” sound.

    – The wind indicator display appears to be interlaced; every other horizontal line is black. Makes it hard to determine wind direction (have screenshots).

    – The game is too much fun. Maybe try to make it suck, just a little, so I don’t stay up so damn late.

    – Haven’t tried any mods yet, other than Apoc; they used to crash the game. Will do.

    – No opinion on the Funkies, other than they’re too cheap.

More as I play… Thanks Gavin, and everyone else that has contributed. I couldn’t want much more in a game, free or otherwise.

As the download says its for the power pc version, not the intel version.
This is the latest version for intel, although it is the last version:-

Looks a mac problem, I’ll have a look into it.

This seems to be an issue on all versions, it should be fixed soon.

You can turn down the environment sounds seperately from the others, see the sound menu.

Just remove the availableforrandom tag from the data/tankais.xml file.

Single player or playing online? Sounds like the client/server is getting out of sync.

    Hmm, bummer.

    – The wind indicator display appears to be interlaced; every other horizontal line is black. Makes it hard to determine wind direction (have screenshots).

    Screen shot would be nice.

FYI I tried the compiled version of 41.1 on my G3 iBook (16 MB Radeon mobility) and it quits at Terminal.

Also I tried this version under OSX 10.3.3 on my G4 – it quits at Terminal with:
dyld: /Applications/Scorched3D-41.1/bin/scorched3d can’t open library: /usr/lib/libstdc++.6.dylib (No such file or directory, errno = 2)

So the minimum system requirements for 41.1 appear to be OSX 10.4.x on a G4 or better

    Hiya-
    Sorry for the delayed response.

Yah, that works, for the sound. This leads me to a related point… On the iMac, which is not exactly an Xtreme Gamer box, I’d like to be able to turn off any extraneous eye candy robbing me of precious CPU/GPU time. Coming from somebody that played UT2k3 on a G3/400 for two years, every tiny bit helps.

    Groovy, thanks.

All the pla- I mean, testing I’ve done so far on 41.1 has been local play against bots. Here’s a couple of screenshots (1024×768, ~600k each):

    See either screenshot above.

One other minor note, regarding the white text with the black solid shadow behind it at the bottom of the screen used for messages and whatnot: previous to 41.1, the black type in the back was offset, getting a bit worse the longer the line of text. This has been fixed in 41.1. Cool.

Thanks again for a great game.
