    Had a totally off-the-wall thought..

As a host, i’ve had thousands of players download mods from the
game-servers.. but have always been restricted in the rate I can send it.

The biggest hinderance to the new players, is that they have to wait a
long time to get the better mods.

What would the spread of mods be like, if the servers had the capacity
to share thier hosted mods in the form of self-tracked -Torrents-.

Players that connect, as well as the server itself, can act as Seeds for
the Mod. With a little bit coming from each side, any new player would
get the mod in a fraction of the time. The more popular the server,
the faster new players would get the mods.

As mods themselves are always locked in on server-loadup, and each
player is already double checked for the same content, there would be
no problem with the file’s integrity checking.

Thats what torrents were made for.
I said about it for videos of tournaments, but would be perfect for mod hosting too, even for the game install files as it would take a rather large load off the servers bandwidth and so cost less.

However, torrents are not that popular, it takes time to connect to people, but they are the cheaper option and people do respect that, occassionally.

<Would be a happy seed, would put my rather expensive connection to good use.

You missed a few lines. I’m not meaning Packing up files and hosting
torrents on a site for browsing…

I mean as part of the game-engine iself. Linking all of the players
together and sharing the mods en-mas to the new joining leechs.

The more popular / full/ a game-server is, the more people will be
sending the mod to the joiners. Mods are smaller than any videos..
Largest mod is only about 35-40mb. small one’s being 2-5mb.
Players in the game would hardly even notice a drain long enough
to start howling, and the new player would have the mod, and start
playing, in a fraction of the time.

are we really getting that upset about leechers? lol

..not like i see any people lined up to slurp mods.

all that work and noboDY even wants em or *rarely*..

so i would have to say no real point.. sry to disagree for once.. 😛
