why not use google earth’s 3d maps… which can stream right from the google earth servers… for scorched 3d…

i know some flight simulators that do that, and it seems awsome…

(probably not for 56k users) –> maybe a separate server could do the job, as it would never be integrated into the official servers because of the slow connections problems…

    just an idea….

Good idea but real implementation will be tough i guess

What about licensing? Those are likely to cost a fortune.

i had an idea for a mod with real elevation maps for all countries.
There are Publicly Available free elevation databases. they have precision around 3 km.

Many Geographics program can open these DB. my idea was to export to gray level map, but i dont know how. the programs seems to export to color maps, maps whit shadows, but not simple gray level map. there must be a way.

    Anyone familiar with geographics programs?

    i wish 😛

btw, if u can get a color map off of those… can u attempt sending it to grayscale with photoshop/gimp

it might come out kinda messed up on a few extremes,
but it should reflect the world more or less…

Nope they are pseudo colors. converting to gray scale require to know exact palette. the problem is that main export is not from top view, but some how with sun shadows (to get real imagination about height)

Naka – could point me to an example? I could likely cook something up toi convert them to a grey heightmap.

satelite image, or road-map style.. for most of the globe.

these maps aren’t suitable for grey-scaling into scorched landscapes,
    a satelite-image isn’t a hight-map.. it’s only a birds-eye-view.

    i’ve tried….

this is my secret special method for height maps:

from 3d studio max, apply a 100% self-illuminated greyscale gradient down the vertical axis. then orthographic rendering from the top. see?

if you can get your maps exported to a 3d format 3d max can recognise, it’s easy

Hm, it seems that many projects use SRTM3 datasets. (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission. 3 at the end meens it has precission of 3 seconds = 90 m.)
    http://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/srtm/

the dataset have extenssion .hst and covers the whole world. there are also SRTM30 – 30sec-1km precission and SRTM1 for America only.

    C++ interface to the data

the program from someguy. it is not working for me but have good info about datasets too.

Great-circle distance formula. may be usefull for converting sphere cordinate system to the flat one. 😀

I just had a look into it (just for fun). There’s a site here that provides VRML format topographic maps: http://www2.evl.uic.edu/pape/vrml/etopo/

I made this using the method I described above:

(the one on the left is the original)

I was thinking, you could maybe convert any colour coded topographic map with some clever photo editing. (this place has plenty: http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/image/2minrelief.html)

I had a go at converting one. Did a hue shift making the red (higher) areas yellow, then converted to greyscale. Might be useful.

wow, nice job with those images ! 😉

i just post an idea and boom ! here come the heightmaps 🙂

as soon as i get a minute i’ll try making a “WORLD” mod or something like that

is there a way i can get the whole world on grayscale.. like one of those flat planet maps converted… then i’ll split it up into continents or something and it’ll be cool 😉

“maps: europe, usa, asia, oceania, antartica” all realistic 😉

dunno how to texture countries separately, but i’ll figure something out 🙂

not sure if this will help, I found a site with Grayscale maps of mars,

    and another site

straight greyscale is no good. it has to be a topographic map. white areas are high, black areas low.

that picture you have marked perspective… you have that modelled in 3d?

if you’re asking me to do it, depends how much work you want me to do.

you can give me 3 europe sized areas of the world if you like. i can’t do the whole thing. that vrml generator has a max of 65k triangles. and you’d still have to tweak it to get it working in scorched.

did you notice the contrast between land-height and ocean depth? the heights in the first map were already exaggerated 20x.
